Bentonpolice.org was created by officers and employees of the Benton Police Dpt.  The initial site took approximately two months to create starting in August of 2009 and it went live in October of the same year. Much of the software used on this site is open source, meaning that it is community created and supported and is offered free of cost to the city.  The site is managed by a Content Management System (CMS) called Joomla. Hosting is provided by Dreamhost.  Images were made with Photoshop CS3 and some HTML markup was smoothed over in Dreamweaver. 12/14/09

  • Added Link to Vinelink to site: Created Vinelink article, put under community programs category.
  • Created new user for maintaining Sex Offenders.
  • Added November Stats
  • Found that the xmap component was not indexing the community resources menu, added it, we should get more google exposure.
  • Added most wanted news slider.  Anything that is put in the new CID -> Most Wanted category will scroll here.
  • Changed global article parameters to stop including a link to the pdf versions of pages and the email page functions since neither of those things work right.

  • Eaton - Added Hostage Negotiation Team Page under Patrol Division.


10/27/09

  • Eaton - Added pictures to Patrol Section intro, DRE intro, and Mission statement.
  • Eaton - Installed a new module: mod_thumbsup.  This module creates a news section on the front page in "right" that will display articles from the category "most wanted".  It sorts by name of the article first.  The first picture in the article is converted to a thumbnail and displayed with the news item.  This will be the new "most wanted" news tool.  Disabled module until I can get the most wanted list articles inputed.
  • Eaton - Removed syndication link from home page, as I think I may be the only person that understands it or uses an rss news aggregator.

  • Found an error in the logs on the default html template, removed "" which was an unneded link to a non exsistant style sheet.

  • Added Crime Stats for September to Crime Stats Page.
  • Moved Crime Stats link back up to the top bar instead of community resources.
  • Installed Ninja Shadowbox plugin that creates the nice looking dynamic popups that are used on the crime stats pages.  This was done becasue the spreadsheets were wider than the content area of the page and it was the best solution I could find.  Tried using iframes  but the result was marginal, and confusing for the end user and it still had the width issues.  As a bonus the shadowbox component can be used in the future to dispay photos, movies, or anything else.
  • Eaton - Added article about sex offender class submitted by Lt. Russell, put it on front page
  • Moved Chief's welcome from the front page to a button on the side
  • Installed Xmap component to generate a site map on the fly from a menu link, also creates a great xml page sitemap for Google, which I submitted so that all our pages will be in the main index.
  • Created a new menu, Misc, which now holds Web Links, Website Updates (this page), and the Site Map
  • Made site live so some people can look at it and proofread.
  • Updated website updates page with brief intro about how site was created
  • Changed Recruting page title to "Join 'Benton's Finest'", moved code of ethics to bottom of page
  • Added titles to Sep 09 UCR and PDWide stats pages, resized windows.
  • Moved Reporting Crime from top menu to Community Resources menu on side.
  • Corrected a few spelling errors
  • Removed everything from front page and replaced it with Chief's Welcome Letter
  • Created Media Releases button on main menu, adjusted layout to single column
  • Fixed support services links to read like articles instead of categories.
